The National Assembly yet again withdrew the Impeachment Procedure Bill of the Kingdom of Bhutan, 2024 from Parliament today. This is the second time that the bill is being withdrawn from the National Assembly. According to the chairperson of the legislative committee of the house, the committee decided to withdraw the Bill as it did not get the time to thoroughly review the views and opinions of the relevant stakeholders. The withdrawal of the bill was approved by all the members of Parliament through show of hands during the session. The Impeachment Procedure Bill was introduced in the Parliament following recommendations from the National Law Review Taskforce and the Office of the Attorney General. The bill was first deliberated in the National Council during the third parliament. The National Assembly rejected the bill in 2020 stating that the bill did not implement all provisions of the Constitution. The Bill, if adopted, will ensure accountability of the holders of constitutional offices.
