Starting next fiscal year, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport will take charge of maintaining and improving district roads. The director general of the Department of Surface Transport said this during the meet the press session yesterday. As for farm roads, the director general added that the responsibility of constructing and maintaining farm roads still lies with local governments.
Director general, Tenzin said that the ministry has been responsible for constructing, repairing and maintaining national highways.
“The responsibility of constructing and maintaining farm roads has been with the local government under the supervision of the agriculture and livestock ministry. The ministry does not have a significant role. However, from now on, the infrastructure and transport ministry will take over supervision”
Additionally, added that the existing Farm Road Development Guidelines will be revised to enhance improvement and maintenance efforts.
Nearly Nu 5bn has been allocated to improve district roads in the 13th Five Year Plan.
In the 13th Five-Year Plan, investments will focus on infrastructure such as roads, bridges, airports, and railways, to boost economic development and productivity.
