Some National Council Members asked the agriculture minister about the possibility of the government buying back eggs from the poultry farmers. Many farmers in Sarpang, Tsirang and Dagana are worried that they may have to close down their poultry farms due to rising feed costs and declining egg prices. Agriculture Minister Yeshey Penjor said this will not be possible since the government has already moved on from the buy-back scheme to the incentive scheme.
“We have stopped the buy-back scheme. We are into incentive-based scheme products where people will be encouraged to produce more. When the government announces the price of the product, farmers will have an option to either sell to the government or their customers. However, the government will not buy back the goods after the farmers refuse to sell them to the government the first time,” said Yeshey Penjor, the Agriculture Minister.
