Samtse recognised for initiating various environmental programmes

Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen granted the certificate of recognition to Samtse Dzongkhag for being the best district in the country to take up various environmental programmes and initiatives yesterday.

Tsirang District and Thimphu Thromde also received similar certificate of recognition. An environmental conservation competition was conducted nationwide on the theme “Beat plastic pollution” on World Environment Day last month. The competition’s pivotal focus was on environmental activities that were carried out throughout the year by respective dzongkhags.

“We conducted door-to-door waste management campaigns. Along with police, we sensitised commuters along the highway not to litter. Most importantly, during the World Environment day, plastic plates and cups were replaced by Eco-friendly bio plates,” said Langa Dorji, Samtse’s Environment Officer.

Tsirang also launched similar plastic waste management programme, which was quite a success. “During public events such as meetings and sports meet, we encouraged people to use bamboo plates and cups instead of those made of plastics. This is best waste management activities initiated here,” The Senior Environment Officer of Tsirang, Dorji Wangdi said.

Coming to Thimphu Thromde, its environment division shared some of the successful activities undertaken to address plastic wastes.

“Plastic waste is collected and converted into commercially valuable products such as fence poles, flower pots, flagpoles and that is done in partnership with the green road company,” said Tshering Yangzom, Thimphu Thromde’s Environment Officer. “Regarding paper wastes, they are taken to Jimina Paper Recycling Plant to make egg trays.”

All dzongkhags and thromdes initiated waste management and environmental programmes by collaborating with government organisations, public and schools.
