Gelegphu Tshachu temporarily closed to visitors

Falling boulders damaged the roof and pillars of the Gelegphu Tsachu ponds last Thursday, prompting authorities to close the popular hot spring to public.

Fortunately, no casualties were reported.

There are four ponds at the Gelegphu Tsachu.

“There were people in the hot as well as the cold pond, but luckily there was no one in the other two ponds that suffered the major damage,” Tsachu caretaker Phuntsho Wangdi said.

Gelegphu Drungkhag Administration Officer Pema said there are risks of more boulders falling off the cliff above the Tsachu.

“For safety reasons, the Tsachu will remain closed to visitors for the time being,” the officer said.

He added restoration works would be carried out soon.
