ACC witnessed drop in complaints last year

Compared to 2016, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) received lesser complaints last year. However, the Local Government continued to receive highest number of complaints, states ACC’s Annual Report 2017.

From 305 complaints received last year, more than half was alleged to be abuse of functions. While 30 embezzlement complaints were received, complaints which are not corruption offences amounted to more than 30 per cent.

When it comes to the local government receiving highest number of allegations, the report states, “this may be attributed to the increasing delegation of responsibilities and resources to the local government without commensurate check and balance and accountability mechanisms.”

With 100 complaints, Thimphu dzongkhag received the highest number of complaints followed by Chhukha with 28 complaints. Tsirang dzongkhag received the least with only two complaints.

The number of people revealing their identity while lodging a complaint also increased by over one per cent last year, compared to 2016.

Of the total complaints, the ACC decided to investigate 39 complaints. Close to 50 per cent of the complaints were forwarded to relevant agencies for administrative actions and sensitisation. The number of dropped complaints also decreased to 83 from 108 in 2016.

Last year, there were 68 complaints awaiting investigation, including those from 2006 to 2017.

However, no complaints were received against any political parties, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reveals the ACC report.
