Construction of MHPA dam nears completion

The construction of Mangdechhu Hydroelectric Project Authority’s dam in Trongsa is expected to take only 9 days to complete. The Executive Engineer, who is overseeing the dam construction said, about 99.0 per cent of the civil works have been complete so far.

Works to build the dam began in 2013. From the deepest foundation level, it stretches to a height of 105 metres.

“Only about 3 metres of concrete works at the top of a dam is left for completion,” Executive Engineer, Kuldeep Kumar Sharma said pointing at the dam site.

Connecting or concreting over the top of the dam blocks is also nearing its completion. Out of nine, four is already complete.

“Before the end of 30th June, we are going to launch a concrete bridge over this and we will complete the work of dam concreting,” added Kuldeep.

The erection of four gates that regulates the flow of water is also 80 per cent complete.

“The purpose of the radial gate is to pass out the excess water whatsoever is coming in the river which may be due to rain or melting of snow which is beyond the capacity of the dam will be passed through the gate,” explained the Executive Engineer.

As per the project’s March work progress report, the overall progress of the dam and associated underground works touched 99 per cent. The work on the 720-megawatt Mangdechhu Hydroelectric Project began in 2011.

Once commissioned, the project is expected to generate about three billion units of electricity and earn about Nu 8bn annually. This is assuming electricity from the project is sold at the cost of Nu 2.5 per unit.
