Farmers resurrect paddy cultivation, receive electric fencing

About 15 households in Chhubhurthang Village under Umling Gewog in Sarpang will grow paddy once again. It has been few years now since the village stopped growing paddy. The reasons- frequent marauding of their crops by wild animals. And villagers did not have electric fences to protect their crops.

This year the Royal Manas National Park, through International Union Conservation of Nature fund, supported in building a 4-kilometre electric fence.

“Our efforts in the past would go in vain as wild animals would destroy our crops. Now with the electric fencing, we are hoping to make bumper harvest.” said Thinley Wangchuk, an ecstatic farmer in Umling.

From this year farmers are willing to work on their paddy fields.” says Leki Wangmo. “We are thankful to the government for the support.”

Meanwhile, the villagers have contributed labour in erecting the fences
