Bhutan Red Cross Society trains mountain bikers to provide first-aid services

Mountain bikers under the Royal Bhutan Police (RBP) will now be more equipped and skilled to provide first aid services in terms of emergencies.

Mountain bikers, being the first aid responders, the Bhutan Red Cross Society trained about 30 of them in Thimphu recently.

They received trainings on non-medical care- the first aid services in cases of accidents and disasters. They were trained to respond to different kinds of emergencies such snake bites, excessive bleeding, fractures and many more.

“If a person chokes suddenly, we were taught to let him bend down and bang on his back for several times. We have to do the same thing on his stomach,” said Leki Chozom, participant. “We have to repeat it until the person gets better.”

Another participant, Kelzang Chophel shared: “When a fight takes place and if someone cuts his legs or hands, we were trained to stop bleeding. We have to get a cloth piece and cover it over the wound. After that, we have to take the victim to hospital.”

Through these one-day hands on training, the participants will have the right techniques on providing first-aid services to the victims.

“The training was held to streamline Bhutan’s national orientated first-aid standards, which are non-medical national standards,” said Dragyel Tenzin Dorji, Secretary General of Bhutan Red Cross Society.

Similar training programmes are also being conducted in Punakha and Wangdue Phodrang, and participants included members and volunteers of Bhutan Red Cross Society.
