Bhutan-India Friendship Tennis Tournament kick-starts

The 4th Bhutan-India Friendship Tennis Tournament began in the capital, yesterday. This year, the tournament commemorates the 50 years of diplomatic relation between the two countries.

The annual event began with the Indian Ambassador to Bhutan, Jaideep Sarkar declaring the tournament open at the National Tennis Centre in Changlimithang. Speaking at the press conference, players from the two countries said they have been looking forward to this tournament and at the same time, training vigorously.

The general secretary of the Bhutan Tennis Federation said the annual event will help tennis enthusiasts get more exposure and promote the sport in the country.

The 60-year-old Satyajeet Burman from India, who has been a part of the tournament since its start, encouraged to put in more numbers of participants.

“We should be getting more young stars next year and let’s try to get good juniors who will be playing men’s and women’s category. We will also suggest interactions between the two offseason.”

In the coming days, the tournament will feature over 70 participants from Thimphu and 7 states of India competing in four different events.

The finals will be played on June 3.
