MHPA to be ready for commissioning in November, assures project management

Cement shortage last month hindered work progress at Mangdechhu hydroelectric project in Trongsa, but project authorities assured the commissioning of the project will take place in November as committed.

To ensure smooth flow of the work, the project has now started stockpiling cement to meet future demand.

About 96 per cent of the works is complete. Concrete works form major part of the remaining works.

“Our requirement of cement is 40 trucks per day. Ten thousand bags should come in everyday and when there is a shortage, definitely, it affects work productivity at the site,” A.K. Mishra, the Managing Director of MHPA, said.

He added that cement shortage is a concern. “It is putting us under pressure as we have committed in writing to government of Bhutan and India about the project commissioning in November this year.”

Last month, cement supply fell short by 70 per cent. The project is now in a much comfortable situation with a shortage of only 30 per cent this week.

Meanwhile, the overall progress of the dam and associated underground works touched 99 per cent as per the project’s March work progress report. The powerhouse is also almost ready with 98 per cent of the works over.

“Dam components will be ready in all aspects by August end and balance concreting works in the powerhouse will be finished before August,” A.K. Mishra, the Managing Director of MHPA, said.

The work on the 720-megawatt Mangdechhu Hydroelectric Project began in 2011.

Once commissioned, the project is expected to generate about three billion units of electricity and earn about Nu 8bn annually. This is assuming electricity from the project is sold at the cost of Nu 2.5 per unit.
