Man sentenced to five years in prison for illicit trafficking of drugs

Thimphu District Court sentenced a 34-year-old man from Dagana to five years imprisonment for illicit trafficking of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.

The judgement passed yesterday says the convict was arrested in July last year for possession of about 200 Sapasmo proxyvon plus or SP+ capsules and also tested positive for drug (Tramadol) during his arrest.

However, the judgement says the convict can pay over Nu 187,000 in lieu of his prison term. This is because he was arrested before the SP Plus capsule was not included as controlled drugs in “Narcotic Drugs, Psychotropic Substances and Substance Abuse Act 2015.”

Following Supreme Court’s circular that SP+ should be considered as controlled drugs in the act, the Parliament revisited the drugs act and added SP+ to the list of controlled drugs in Narcotic Drugs, Psychotropic Substances and Substance Abuse (Amendment) Act 2017 in November last year.
