ECB sets up 5 more postal facilitation booths in four districts

With increasing number of electorates preferring to exercise their franchise through postal ballot facilitation booths, the Election Commission of Bhutan (ECB) has set up five more such booths in Thimphu, Sarpang, Samdrup Jongkhar and Trongsa for the upcoming National Council election.

Of five booths, two have been set up in the capital, while other three districts: Sarpang, Samdrup Jongkhar and Trongsa have one each. Earlier, ECB made arrangements of 64 postal ballot facilitation booths across the country.

The facilitation booth will be open for three consecutive days starting from April 12 for the voters to cast their votes.

Sonam Tobgyal, the Head of the Department of Election told BBS: “There is some misunderstanding that although people have VPIC , they might have to obtain a new one. But I want to clarify that the VPIC issued by us during the 2011 LG election is valid even today.”

The procedure for voting through the facilitation booth is almost same as voting in person. The only difference is once the voter is checked by the polling officers, he will be handed a ballot. After making his choice, the ballot will be sealed in an envelope and handed it over to a polling officer, who will then put it in another envelope and return to the voter. The voter will then put the envelope in a box, thereby completing the voting procedure.

From more than 88,000 registered postal voters in the country, nearly 60,000 have chosen to vote through facilitation booths. Meanwhile, ECB will operate mobile facilitation booth for prisoners and people living with disability.
