H5N1 outbreak in Samdrup Jongkhar

More than 30 chickens have died in Samdrup Jongkhar town as of Saturday. A rapid test showed the birds died of H5NI outbreak.

Officials have sent bird carcasses to the National Animal Centre in Serbithang, Thimphu for laboratory tests to confirm the outbreak.

The deaths were reported in the Zangdopelri area, which has become a home to Tsethar chickens.

Town residents said the birds started dying some time ago but officials were alerted only last Tuesday.

BAFRA, livestock and veterinary officials immediately ran tests and concluded it as an H5NI outbreak.

The remaining birds in the area were culled to prevent the spread of the disease.

Officials also briefed the residents to stay away from the Zangdoperlri area until further notice.
