Forest fire in Paro contained

The forest fire in Paro that raged on for almost a week has been finally contained. The fire that spread towards Taktsang monastery was put out around 3 yesterday afternoon, while the fire in Doteng Gewog was contained earlier in the day.

The last five days have been a harrowing ordeal for the thousands of firefighters who battled the fire almost round the clock, and also for the livestock and people in the affected areas.

Fanned by fierce wind, and with rough terrain challenging the firefighters, the fire raged on unabated, burning acres and acres of forests and killing scores of animals.

About 20 yaks and cattle are reported to have been killed.

Officials warn the number of animal deaths could rise. The actual number would be known once the damage assessment, which is going on, is complete.

The cause of the fire is not known.
