Non-subsidised LPG cylinders hit market

The economic affairs ministry launched the non-subsidied LPG cylinders today at Thimphu’s Mothithang fuel depot. The green color of the cylinder distinguishes it from other existing LPG cylinders.

While it weighs the same as the subsidied domestic cylinder, the cost is higher. Consumers will have to pay a one-time refundable security deposit of Nu 1,650.

As for the refill cost, it will differ from place to place. Those in Thimphu will have to pay Nu 815.

At the launch, the economic affairs minister said the non-subsidised LPG cylinders can be availed easily compared to other cylinders. “If you want normal, subsidised cylinder, you have to have LPG card and now you also need the m coupon app,” Minister Leki Dorji said.

“Also, domestic cylinders are not available all the time. But with the new cylinder, you can get it whenever you want it because we have it in sufficient supply,” the minister added.

The distribution of non-subsidised LPG cylinders is to meet the current demand for LPG in the country. It is also expected to help distribute more subsidised LPG to the rural households.

The Chief Trade Officer with the Trade Regulation and Monitoring Division, Rinchen Lhazom, said the expectation is that people who can afford the non-subsidised cylinders would opt for it.

“We would like to request those who can afford the new cylinders to surrender their LPG cards for the non-subsidised cylinders. This will help us distribute more subsidised LPG to the rural areas,” Rinchen Lhazom said.

The new cylinders will be available in the four Thromdes of Thimphu, Phuentsholing, Gelephu and Samdrup jongkhar for now.

The Indian Oil Corporation Limited will be the principle supplier of the non-subsidised gas. It will deliver 1,000 metric tons of gas every month.

Bhutan Oil Distributors, Damchen Petroleum Distributors and Druk Petroleum Corporation Ltd will be the sole distributors of the non-subsidised gas cylinders in the country.
