Widening of Monggar-Lhuentse highway deferred: MoWHS Minister

Widening works of Monggar-Lhuentse highway has been deferred due to delay in construction of Shingkhar-Gorgan bypass. This was shared by Works and Human Settlement Minister, Dorji Choden while meeting with the people of Gangzur Gewog of Lhuentse recently.

She explained to the gewog officials and villagers that the Shingkhar-Gorgan bypass project has not seen the light of the day owing to hesitation from the National Environment Commission to grant environmental clearance. If the project kick-starts, the highway widening works will also face similar fate since both are part of East-West highway widening project.

The Works and Human Settlement Minister, however, pointed out that since Dorjilung hydropower project will be implemented near the Monggar-Lhuentse highway, the widening works must be planned properly. “Prior to road widening, if we don’t discuss with the hydropower project officials, our expenditure will go down the drain. It would be much more convenient if things are sorted out before the plan is implemented,” added the minister.

Making two-lane East-West National highway is one of the pledges of the government.
