Local leaders of Kurtoed Gewog concerned about GC road quality

Local leaders of Kurtoed Gewog in Lhuentse voiced their concerns regarding the quality of blacktopped portions of their Gewog Centre (GC) road to the Works and Human Settlement Minister, Dorji Choden.

Lyonpo was there on Friday to examine the progress of the ongoing blacktopping works. Gewog officials informed the minister that some parts of the blacktopped road have already developed potholes. “Route from gewog until Thimyul, the quality of blacktop is good but further from there, the quality is not good. We are really worried if the quality might deteriorate within no time,” said the Tshogpa Sonam Dorji.

Gewog officials also said, they are worried that some portions of the road are unblacktopped.

The Department of Roads said, they have instructed the contractors to fill up the potholes. Concerning the issue of some unblacktopped stretches, the department clarified that was due to marshy area. “Most parts of the GC road is located in marshy area. Even if we blacktop the stretch, it will be of no use and we would only waste the government money,” said the Chief Engineer, Department of Roads, Karma Rinzin.

The Works and Human Settlement Minister, Dorji Choden informed the Kurtoed gewog officials and villagers that while blacktopping of many GC roads are well on track, some are lagging behind the schedule. And that’s due to same reason cited by the road engineers. However, the Gangzur GC road’s blacktopping was completed and inauguration was held on Friday.

Up until now, six Gewog Centre roads in Lhuentse have been blacktopped.  The blacktopping of remaining two GC roads is underway. The Nu 232 M project is being funded by the Government of India.
