Farmers group in Chhimoong needs cotton spinning machine to boost production

A farmers group with support from Tarayana Foundation is working to revive the cotton production in Pema Gatshel.

The foundation has trained the farmers in Chhimoong Village under Chhimoong Gewog and is helping them to market textiles woven with cotton yarns. But when it comes to producing cotton yarns, farmers are still using the traditional spinners, which is time-consuming and tedious. They said cotton wool spinning machine will ease their task.

“If we get modern machine, we can produce wool in large quantity. Although we have one spinner provided by Tarayana, we need more,” said one of the members of farmer’s group, Pema Ngadon.

The Tarayana Foundation’s Field Officer, Deki Zangmo said, the discussion is underway with the members to take their products to Thongsa, where there is carding and ginning machine. The head office has already been informed about farmers’ request to have another spinning machine, she added.

The group members were also trained to dye cotton wool with locally available materials earlier this year.

“We are keen to do our best to produce cotton textiles and madam of Tarayana has told us they will find market to sell our products,” said Ugyen Peldon, another member in the group.

The group started growing cotton since last year. They harvested over 100 kilograms of cotton this time. The group has 10 members.
