Seven GC roads in SJ blacktopped

The Department of Roads has so far blacktopped a total of 70 kilometres of Gewog Centre (GC) roads in seven gewogs of Samdrup Jongkhar. The works were carried out at a cost of about Nu 196m.

Only four GC roads in the dzongkhag now remain to be blacktopped. The roads that were blacktopped recently are the 23-kilometre Serthig Gewog GC road and 12-kilometre Wangphu GC road.

Better roads mean many things, all good. Travelling becomes easy. “The villagers can now travel peacefully,” said Sangay Tenzin, the Gup of Wangphu Gewog.

“Apart from the comfortable drive, it takes less time now to get to our village,” said Norbu Wangdi, a villager from Serthig Gewog.

It also opens up economic opportunities for the villagers. “The blacktopped roads will enable farmers to transport their farm produce to the market easily,” said Pema Chophel, the Gup of Serthig Gewog.

Of the four remaining GC roads that are yet to be blacktopped, one is the 10-kilometre Gomdar GC road. It is expected to be blacktopped by February next year.

The Department of Roads plans to blacktop the 37-kilometre long Lauri GC road in the 12th Five Year Plan.  The blacktopping of the 300-metre Samrang GC road and 170-metre Dewathang GC road are also to be carried out in the next plan.
