The Department of Roads (DoR) in Trongsa and the contractor executing the blacktopping works of Korphu Gewog Centre (GC) road have signed one more commitment agreement to ensure works complete on time.
The agreement was signed after a committee, comprising of road officials and other relevant agencies was formed to monitor the work progress. The committee was founded following a resolution passed during last month’s Dzongkhag Tshogdu, where members profoundly raise concerns over the matter.
Even during the recent stakeholders meeting, road officials and gewog officials reminded the contractor to speed up the work.
The contractor signed the first commitment agreement with the Roads Department in January last year when the blacktopping of GC road commenced. Road officials said the contractor was also given ‘hindrance period’ during monsoon where works were stalled due to flash floods and landslides.
“Although 75 percent of the time period is over, only 30 percent of work is complete. So it is really a thing to be worried. Now according to the new arrangement, if he fails to complete the work on time, we have to terminate the contract,” said Chief Engineer of DoR in Trongsa, Taugay Choedup.
The committee also visited the sites and observed that not much progress has been achieved. But, contractor cited that due to geographical conditions, works were delayed and promised to finish the work on time.
“The monsoon is over, so has the rain. Now, I don’t foresee any hindrances and these days, works are progressing well,” said Chimi Dorji, the Project Manager of Druk Lhayul Construction.
Blacktopping of Korphu GC road is expected to be complete by March, next year. Nubi Gewog is also getting its GC road blacktopped. The Gewog Centre roads in three other gewogs do not have to be blacktopped since they are all part of national highways. Trongsa has five gewogs.
