Thongsa cotton weaving group gets thread processing machines

Thongsa Kamthangma Detshen or Thongsa cotton weaving group in Chongshing Gewog, Pema Gatshel is happy that they no longer have to process cotton threads manually which is tedious.

The Agency for Promotion of Indigenous Crafts (APIC) recently provided nine thread processing machines to the group. The sophisticated machines will enhance the quality of cotton threads as they have features to soften and improve the quality of yarns. The cost of machines is Nu 300,000.

“Since yarns are spun by machines, we don’t have to spend much time on spinning it. The machines are very useful for us,” said the Deputy Chairperson of Thongsa cotton weaving group, Namkha Lhamo.

The group is now looking forward to weaving more textiles and earn good income. However, marketing their products is an uphill task.

“Our weaving group is here in Chongshing, a remote place and we can only sell our products in Thimphu,” added Namkha.

To improve market accessibility, the group is planning to build a showroom in their village to display their products. The fund for the construction will be provided by the government.

Thongsa cotton weaving group has 20 members and was formed last year.
