Minjey Gewog requests PM to upgrade their school to central school

Villagers of Minjey Gewog in Lhuentse requested the Prime Minister to upgrade the Minjey Middle Secondary School to a central school. The proposal was put up during the meeting with the Prime Minister yesterday.

The gewog’s former Gup Kuenzang Tobgay said Minjey Middle Secondary School has adequate infrastructure and is therefore suitable to be upgraded to central school.

“Over the years we were happy when we heard that the school would be converted into a central school. But recently, we haven’t heard anything. So today am happy to raise this concern to the honourable Lyonchhen,” he added.

However, Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay clarified that the government will not be able to develop the school as a central school since it does not fulfill the criterion of required number of students.

“To be frank, we cannot upgrade schools to central schools if there is no required number of students. We cannot simply change the school into central school with only 400 students,” said Lyonchhen.

Another former Gup Jigme Tshewang asked the Prime Minister regarding the system of enrolling students in central schools.

“In central schools, I observe that children of civil servants are enrolled. This trend might eventually hamper the children from humble backgrounds. The objective of the central schools is to the benefit the farmers’ children or needy students.”

Lyonchhen said the government must also give equal opportunity to the children of civil servants living nearby central schools. This will encourage public servants to serve in rural pockets of the country.

“It is difficult to pinpoint students coming from humble backgrounds. Every one of you would say you all are low-income family. I feel Gyalpoi Tozey is the one who fulfills the criteria to study in central school and most of them are currently studying in central schools,” Prime Minister added. “You want students of civil servants to be given least priority to get enrolled in central schools. But if we don’t, then civil servants would like to stay in Thimphu and they won’t come to serve in the rural areas.”

Prime Minister further said 60 more central schools will be established in the next five-year plan. He completed visiting all the eight gewogs of Lhuentse today.
