New Gelegphu referral hospital misses September deadline

The deadline for the completion of the new Gelegphu Central Regional Hospital has now been extended to November.

The works started in 2013 and was due for completion last month. The project manager says many factors are to be blamed for the delay.

Variation or change in the project’s original plan and design is one of them. The contractor, according to the project manager, had to carry our additional works worth over Nu 96m not included in the original contract.

Delays in the supply of construction materials and labor shortage were other challenges. “The materials often did not reach the site on time because of the strikes in the neighboring Indian states,” said Jampel Dorji, the Project Manager.

“Sometimes, the roads and bridges were washed away by monsoon fed rivers.”

The project manager expects the civil works, both external and internal, and installation of medical equipment by November. But the testing and commissioning of the equipment is likely to take another one or two months.

The new 150-bedded hospital when complete is expected to more spacious and provide an improved health care service. The original cost for the hospital was Nu.789m but the cost has escalated by Nu 90m because of the many additional works that have been carried out.

The construction is funded by the government of India.
