Dorokha farmers learn Zhungdra, Boedra for first time

It has been over a month since people in Dorokha Drungkhag in Samtse have been rehearsing traditional dances to be performed during the consecration ceremony of their much awaited Gatsheling Lhakhang next month.  As part of rehearsals, villagers are learning Zhungdra and Boedra dance moves which never crossed their minds before.

As there is a saying that practice makes man perfect, some 25 farmers have now become well-versed in singing and dancing Zhungdra and Boedra. They said since Zhungdra and Boedra are integral part of Bhutanese performing arts, they consider it as an achievement.  Farmers have also learned some other folk songs.

“Forget about knowing the meaning of Zhungdra and Boedra, we never heard about it before. But today, we are well familiarised about the songs,” said one of the villagers, Dechen Tshomo.

Villagers are doubly happy to consecrate their Lhakhang which would give them opportunities to offer prayers and gain merits.

“We are very happy that a Lhakhang will be consecrated in our village. It would create spiritual and religious ambience in our village,” said Sonam Dawa, a villager.

The construction of Gatsheling Lhakhang began in 2015 and will be complete by next month. It is being built at the same place where the old Lhakhang was knocked down to the ground by an earthquake in 2011. Dorokha Drungkhag Administration has invested about Nu 20 M in entire construction of the temple.
