Former Phuentshogling Thrompon charged with deception

Office of the Attorney General

The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has booked the former Phuentshogling Thrompon on two counts of deceptive practices.

He is accused of having submitted false affidavits during the Thrompon election in 2011 and 2015. The OAG forwarded the case to Chhukha District Court yesterday. The district court will now see whether it has the jurisdiction power to accept the case.

According to the Election Act, person seeking election as a member of parliament or a local government is not allowed to hold any office of profit at the time of filing their nomination as a candidate and also while serving as member.

But the former Phuentshogling Thrompon, Tsheten Dorji, had a business license registered in his name, which was operated by a former employee.

OAG says despite having a business licence, Tsheten Dorji knowingly contested and won the Thrompon election in 2011.  He is, therefore, charged for submitting false information to the Election Commission of Bhutan and false affidavit to the Royal Court of Justice during both the Thromde elections.

Following a tip off, the Election Commission of Bhutan (ECB) disqualified Tsheten Dorji two days before the poll day, while re-contesting during the 2015 Thromde elections. The Anti-Corruption Commission investigated the case and forwarded it to the OAG.
