Long planned business council yet to be established

Its been more than three years now since the economic affairs minister announced the establishment of a council to improve the country’s business climate. But the council is yet to be established.

Called Better Business Council  then, the then economic affairs minister Norbu Wangchuk announced the decision to establish it at the closing of a business summit held in 2014.

At the Meet the Press session yesterday, the Prime Minister explained that the council could not be established because they could not decide on the institutional mechanism.

The Prime Minister also said that though the council itself has not been established, a secretariat was formed, which he said has been doing the works of the council.

“When we first decided to establish the Better Business Council, the idea was that it would be an autonomous agency,” said Dasho Tshering Tobgay.

However, Lyonchhen said to get the work started, the Ministry of Economic Affairs should set up a temporary secretariat. “Th results from the secretariat will be seen from a wide range of areas, from economic growth data to ease of doing business improvement in Bhutan,” he said.

The Prime Minister also said they have asked for a final proposal from the experts working with the secretariat in terms of what they would like to accomplish in the remaining nine months and be guided by their recommendations.
