Supreme Court upholds High Court’s verdict on Gidawom mining case

The Supreme Court has upheld the high court’s verdict on the Gidawom Mining case.

In the judgment passed last Friday, the Supreme Court asked the three mining companies- Taktshang Stone Quarry, RSA Pvt. Limited and Riverview Mining Company- to pay a compensation of Nu 748,000 to the eight households in Gidawom for the damages caused to their homes by mine blasting.

The companies also have to maintain and blacktop the road from Gida-zam till the mining sites, and resolve drinking and irrigation water problems.

The High Court’s judgment said that mining licenses should be cancelled or not renewed. But Supreme Court’s judgement said that will be taken care by the National Environment Commission.

Twenty nine households of Gidawom took the mining companies to the court in August 2014. The mining companies appealed to the High Supreme Court in March this year.
