2016 national tennis champion determined to defend his title

At just 15 years of age, Tenzin Singye Dorji was crowned the national tennis champion last year. He is determined to defend his title this year as well.

Tenzin Singye Dorji has already secured a confirmed spot in the semi finals of the ongoing Gyalsey Jigme Namgyel National Tennis Open. He crushed Yonten Dorji 6-1 and 6-0 in two consecutive sets played yesterday.

Sharing his thoughts on how far tennis has come in the country, the national champion said the interest in the game has grown over the years. More youths, he said, are now showing interest in playing tennis.

“Earlier, when such tournaments were conducted, the finals would always be between the teachers and the seniors,” he shared. “But now the finalists are mostly students and young players.”

Tenzin Singye Dorji has also reached the semi finals in the men’s double in which he has Nidup Gyeltshen as his partner.

Meanwhile, the veterans’ single semi finals will be played tomorrow. Around 50 participants from various districts are taking part in the week long Gyalsey Jigme Namgyel National Tennis Open.
