SAFF U18 Championship goes down to the wire

The final day of the 2017 SAFF U18 Championship is upon us and four teams are still in contention to win the championship.

Bhutan’s fairy tale run in the SAFF U18 Championship was brought to a halt when India slammed three goals past Bhutan’s Karma Sonam Tenzin.

Nepal and India had to fight back into the championship after they suffered opening match defeats. Bangladesh on the other hand was all over the place in their 2-1 defeat to Nepal last time out.

Four teams- India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan, all on six points. The math is simple for all the four teams. Go out, win the game and hope for the best. It might end with the championship being decided on head-to-head record.

Bhutan and Bangladesh kick things off at the Changlimithang at 4pm, today. For Bhutan to secure the championship, they need to beat Bangladesh and hope Nepal draws or edges India to a win. This way, Bhutan’s head-to-head record with Nepal will give them the championship.

Similarly for Bangladesh, they will be praying for India’s win against Nepal. That being said, they will not leave it in the hands of India and Nepal. With Bangladesh’s attacking flair and Bhutan’s home support, it promises to be a mouthwatering contest.

India and Nepal have the advantage and both teams will look to steal the championship under the noses of Bhutan and Bangladesh. With the result between Bhutan and Bangladesh decided, these two teams will come out into the field knowing exactly what to do.

If Bhutan and Nepal win their matches, Bhutan will win the championship courtesy better head-to-head record against Nepal. Similarly, if India and Bangladesh come out on top, Bangladesh will be crowned champions on head-to-head record.

Anything might happen, anyone can win, nothing is certain but one thing is for sure, the crowd at the Changlimithang is certain to be entertained.
