Space problem at Yongla Goenpa as crowd at Phurpai Drubchhen swells

The Phurpai Drubchhen at Yongla Goenpa in Pema Gatshel has turned out to be a crowd-puller in the recent years. As a growing number of people throng the festival, accommodating devotees has become a challenge for the Goenpa.

“People have to stay outside whether it rains or shines due to limited space inside the present lhakhang,” said Pema Gyalpo, the Secretary of Pema Gatshel Rabdey.

But the issue is temporary, added the Secretary. The new lhakhang, which is currently under construction, will be spacious. The Goenpa hopes to be able to conduct the next Phurpai Drubchhen in the new structure expected to be complete early next year.

“Hopefully, we will be able to address most of the space-related problems we are facing today.”

The Phurpai Drupchhen at Yongla Goenpa is considered one of most sacred ceremonies. The more than a week-long festival is believed to have started in 1964.
