Takila Lhakhang in need of facelift

Takila Lhakhang in Maenbi Gewog in Lhuentse is in dire need of renovation. Major cracks have been developed on the walls of the Lhakhang and the statues inside it are in poor condition.

The Lhakhang is located just opposite to the iconic Guru Statue. No one knows when it was actually built. Who built it, is also not known. But people believe that the temple is at least three-centuries old.

It is now in pathetic condition with no renovations carried out in recent times. The Maenbi Gewog Administration, however, hopes to resurrect the temple to its former glory in the next five-year plan.

“We need to restore the Lhakhang since Takila has become a tourist destination now. You can see many statues are either without hands or legs. The temple also lacks basic amenities,” said Maenbi Gup, Tshethrimla.

The Gup said over hundred volumes of Kanjur was damaged by rain without a proper roof. The Kanjur has been shifted and kept in the new temple. A Buddhist Institute was also established in the Lhakhang prior to the construction of Guru Statue. The Drubdhey was later moved to a new building, constructed next to the Guru Statue.

Despite its worst condition, people from nearby villages perform a local festival known as Drochhung, in the temple every year.
