Farmers in Gomdar sulk as blacktopping of GC road takes time

Villagers of Gomdar Gewog in Samdrup Jongkhar are not happy with the blacktopping progress of their Gewog Centre (GC) road. The work that was supposed to be complete by October last year is still underway.

When the blacktopping work started, villagers thought that their bumpy rides to and from the gewog were over.

But almost a year after the deadlines, only a kilometres of the GC road has been blacktopped. The work along the 10-kilometre stretch began in July, 2015.

“I heard contractor failed to work. Most gewog roads are blacktopped, but here it is otherwise. It is inconvenient to drive along the road. We would be grateful if works are completed sooner,” said Phuntsho Wangdi, the Tshogpa of one of the chiwogs under Gomdar Gewog.

His view was echoed by other villagers.

“I don’t know why the blacktopping is incomplete. It is difficult to drive considering the current condition of the road,” Pema Chador.

Officials of Department of Roads in Samdrup Jongkhar said, for failing to complete the work despite extending the contract, the office had to terminate the contractor. The work has been awarded to another contractor and it is expected to resume from next month. The completion date has been rescheduled to January, next year.
