AMC & BSB build farm machinery of national standard

The Agriculture Machinery Centre (AMC) in Paro collaborated with Bhutan Standards Bureau (BSB) and started building a mechanised farm tool that suits the national standard.

As per the national standard, there is a minimum requirement for the import and manufacture of farm machinery in the country.

The move is to prevent Bhutan from becoming a dumping yard of exhausted agricultural machinery. The first power tiller standard was launched in Paro recently.

Since the start of Farm Mechanisation Progamme in Bhutan in 1984, there was not national standard set for any mechanised agricultural machines imported to the country.

Due to this, farmers while using power tillers for agricultural operations faced many problems. Sometimes, tillers break down and other times, the spare parts run out of stock.

“Though we received machines under KR2 grant from Japan, some would not function at all. Even another model from Mitsubishi Companu had to undergo chassis replacement,” said Kinga Norbu, the Officiating Programme Director of AMC.

He added the national standard is expected to help both the entrepreneurs and farmers, “Private sectors and government enterprises selling power tillers can avoid post sale complications. For the farmers, the machines will be durable and effective for use.”

AMC officials said the machines will checked if it meets all the minimum requirements before hitting the market.

Firms and companies dealing with import and distribution of farm machinery attended the consultative meeting and awareness on Farm Machinery Standards and Implementation Strategy.
