A national water commission to be established

A national water commission will be set up this year to address water related issues in the country.

Announcing this in the Parliament on Monday, the Prime Minster said the commission will develop holistic plans and policies to ensure adequate supply of water for both drinking as well as irrigational purposes.

Lyonchhen said one of the major concerns in the rural areas is shortage of water, which is getting worse by the day.

Deeply concerned by this, the Prime Minister said the government has allocated Nu 358m for supply and maintenance of water supply in the rural parts of the country.

“The government has also allocated Nu 342m for preservation and supply of irrigation water,” added Lyonchhen.

The Prime Minister said the problem of drinking water shortage also exists in the urban areas. “For instance, in Thimphu, there is no continuous water supply,” he said.

“Thromde is working together with the government to ensure continuous water supply. In the last four years, the government invested Nu 465m for supply and maintenance of Thimphu’s water supply system,” he added.

A total of Nu 86m has been allocated for Thimphu Thromde for this year.
