Monk body departs for Punakha

Nov 25, 2011

In keeping with a time honoured tradition, His Holiness the Je Khenpo and the monks of the central monastic body left for their winter residence at Puna Dewai Chenpoi Phodrang today.

They were then seen off by the Prime Minister and cabinet ministers from the Tashichhodzong.

As the monk body left the dzong in a stately procession, thousands of devotees queued along the roadside to receive blessings from His Holiness and the sacred relics.

His Holiness and the monk body will halt for the night at Thinleygang Lhakhang before proceeding to the Puna Dewa Chenpoi Phodrang early tomorrow morning.

The tradition of maintaining a summer and a winter residence was first introduced by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel in the 17th century.

The monk body spends the summer at the Tashichhodzong, leaving for Punakha on the first day of the 10th Bhutanese month. They return to Thimphu on the first day of the fourth Bhutanese month.
