FAB model catches judges’ attention at an exhibition

Gelephu Higher Secondary School or GHSS’s Far and Beyond or FAB model, won the top prize in a science exhibition contest held recently in Bumthang.

The model shows how science can ensure sustainable development and guarantee a harmonious society in the country. Amongst 28 schools that represented eight dzongkhags, the model impressed the judges the most.

From a Power Worker that is designed to work on mountainous terrain to a Forest Conservation System and many more, the FAB model had it all to steal the show.

The Forest Conservation System is designed to alert the community during a forest fire outbreak with a siren that rings due to the heat of the fire.

The windmill is a design of how power can be generated from even gentle winds. Likewise, there are food preservation methods and a biogas plant that can be developed even in urban areas.

With the win, the team is filled with pride and has some serious message to the higher authorities.

“After the win, students get the certificates and then everything is over. I think it would be better if the government could actually look at these ideas and implement it in our country. If the government can arrange a museum where the winning models of this kind of exhibitions are kept, so that when foreigners come, this museum can also work as a tourist attraction,” said Tashi Gyeltshen, a student of GHSS.

Similar exhibitions were also held in Thimphu, Tsirang and Trashigang involving all the Middle and Higher Secondary Schools in the country.

The top three models from each region are selected for a national competition in Thimphu next month. The programme is an initiative of the Royal Education Council.
