Flood protection wall along Amochu bank

People residing on the banks of Amochu in Phuentshogling will not have to worry about being hit by flood disaster this monsoon. Thanks to the river diversion efforts being undertaken by private construction companies.

The river diversion works include the construction of a four kilometre flood embankment wall. Over 30 dumpers and 20 excavators are at work to construct the embankment wall, which will be six meter high.

Three private constructions companies are carrying out the works. They claim to have spent around Nu 100M so far. In return, these companies are to take the sand and stone dredged in the process of building the flood protection wall.

The initiative was welcomed by Phuentshogling residents particularly those residing in close proximity to Amochu. Lungten Wangdi, a businessman in Toorsa is relieved.

“Every year, the swollen Amochu causes a lot of damage in the area. We did come up with measures on our own in the past years but they were not effective. This time, the flood walls look promising. Hopefully, it will protect us,” said Lungten Wangdi.

Tandin Tshering, another resident recounted the past flood incidences.  “There was a flood last year and the year before. Both residents and authorities were not prepared, so the flood caused massive damage to properties. This year, flood protection measures are being carried out. The embankment walls look strong,” said Tandin Tshering.

The river, if not diverted, poses threat to lives and properties in the area during monsoon. Apart from the National Housing Development Corporation Limited’s housing colony being constructed in the area, Amochu area is also home to over a hundred other companies.
