Shoes for the needy

Oct 26, 2011

The temporary staff of the Thimphu Thromde (City Corporation) and their children living in Chang-ge-daphu in Thimphu got a pleasant surprise today. They received 212 pairs of footwear, courtesy of Shoe Vival, a private enterprise which refurbishes and restores old shoes.

The shoes were collected during a campaign launched by the enterprise last month. They were cleaned and restored before being distributed to the people.

As the shoes arrived, excited children accompanied by their parents made a beeline. The children chose the shoes trying them on one at a time, their parents making sure it fit them snugly.

Shoe Vival has collected 3,000 pairs of shoes in about a month. Initially, the plan was to distribute the shoes in remote areas.

Dawa Dakpa, the proprietor, launched the campaign not only to provide shoes to the poor and the needy but also to help save the environment by recycling and reusing old shoes.

The shoes were donated by people from nine dzongkhags.
