Reduce admission age say principals

Oct 22, 2011

School principals in Chhukha district asked the district education conference to consider reducing the age for admission in pre-primary class in government schools to five years.

Currently, children must be six years or above to seek admission in government schools.

Dorji Wangdi, the principal of Dungna Lower Secondary School said children in rural areas do not have access to day care centres like in urban areas. Day care centres in urban areas like Thimphu admit children as young as four years.

A few other school principals also put forward an impassioned argument supporting the reduction in the age limit.

The District Education Officer however said it may not be advisable to change the age limit and deviate from the government policy.
