New political parties emerging

Oct 20, 2011

It is likely that the people of Bhutan will have more choice of political parties in the next parliamentary elections in 2013. This will mean that there will be a primary round of elections to elect two parties which will contest the general elections.

BBS has learnt of two separate groups of people who are in the process of forming political parties.

Dr. Tandin Dorji, a former People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, is working with a group of politically minded people to form one.

They have meeting regularly to brainstorm the party ideology, logo and the charter informally.

He cited leadership, lack of funds and what he called restrictive electoral laws as some of the constraints in forming a political party.

A former dzongda, Dasho Penjor, is also initiating the formation of the second party. He said they have just begun work to form a political party. They are doing the ground work.
