His Majesty in Haa

Sep 27, 2011

His Majesty the King arrived in Haa yesterday. Haa and Samtse are two of the worst affected districts by the recent earthquake.

According to an initial report, the earthquake has damaged more than 1200 households and 63 lhakhangs and chortens in Haa.

His Majesty met with about 122 households from Samar, Eusu and Katsho Geogs. His Majesty told the people that he was glad to be in Haa to get firsthand knowledge about the damage caused by the earthquake.

His Majesty also said relief works are being carried out so that nobody is left without shelter or food.

His Majesty told the gathering that he would like to personally see all the damages and hear the views of the people and oversee the work being done by the army, De suups and volunteers. “We will rebuild your lives together,” His Majesty reassured them.

In the afternoon, His Majesty also visited TachuGoenpa and houses located in the area. Although the Goenpa has suffered a major damage, His Majesty commanded that religious ceremonies and festivals be conducted as usual. The Goenpa was built in the 18th century.

Earlier yesterday, before leaving for Haa, His Majesty also visited the UN office in Thimphu, which was damaged by the earthquake.
