Social Media Policy, endorsed in January this year, says social media is not just about better communication but has the potential to transform government.

Information and Media officers of various government and other agencies are facilitators to strengthen democracy and improve accessibility of information.

“When we talk about democracy, it is all about transparency, dialogue with the public or relevant stakeholders and building trust of the public. And social media has the potential to achieve all these goals, said MoIC’s Chief Information and Media Officer, Tshering Yangden.

She said many with many Bhutanese online, especially the youth, it will be an advantage for the government and the agencies to reach out to them.

Over 40 Media officers are undergoing two-day training for developing Social Media strategy and plans for their respective agencies.

The training is one of the information and communications ministry’s efforts to institutionalize the use of social media for the government to interact or formulate public policies so that the citizens take part and get a sense of ownership.
