Apple export price increases

Aug 30, 2011

The apple exporters are happy this year as they go about the business of buying the apples from farmers, and grading, packaging, and transporting them. That’s because the price is much better compared to last year.

This year, a box of apples weighing 20 kilograms is fetching Nu.750 in India. They are being sold for Nu.800 to Nu.900 in Bangladesh.

Last year, a 20 kilogram box of apples fetched Nu.700 at the onset of the export season. Soon the price started dropping and towards the end of the season, a box of apples got only Nu.350.

The increase in price is attributed to the low yield in the Indian states.

The production in Bhutan is also low but the demand is growing and the price is expected to soar.
