Power blackouts hamper Dagana

Aug 29, 2011

The town and dzong area in Dagana have been facing erratic power supply for over a year now, leaving the residents frustrated.

The good news is it will receive constant power supply by the end of next month.

Choki, a resident, said “we have been facing the problem ever since the Darachhu Mini-station broke down last year. The problem starts when we are about to cook in the morning and evening.”

Karma Dawa, another resident, said “sometimes our food gets spoiled in the rice cooker due to power failure. People coming from distant places cannot avail themselves of banking facilities due to power failure.”

Due to the inconsistent power supply, even the Dagana Dzong renovation project, one of the largest power consumers in the Dzong area, had to set up its own power supply to run its saw mills and machines.

According to Kinley Gyeltshen, the project manager, “even when there is power supply, the voltage is low. We cannot run the sawmill. The computers shut down in Dagana Dzongkhag.”

It all started after the 200 Kilowatt Darachhu micro station was forced to shut down in 2009 following heavy rainfall.

Dagana Dzongkhag depends on this micro station for its electricity supply. At the moment, power to the Dzong area is supplied from Dagapela through the old power lines.

The situation is expected to improve once the Dzong and the town area are connected to a new power line which is under construction.
