HRH The Gyalsey named Jigme Namgyel WangchuckThousands gathered at the courtyard of Punakha Dzong welcomed the news with thunderous applause as His Majesty The King announced His Royal Highness The Gyalsey will be called Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck.

Before the name was made public today, many glued to TV and some internet, waited in anticipation.

The anticipation grew as His Majesty The King walked into Punakha Dzong carrying The Gyalsey in his arms, followed closely by Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen.


Translation Of His Majesty’s Address To The People On The Occasion Of The Naming Tendrel Of His Royal Highness The Gyalsey

Once inside the dzong, His Majesty The Fourth Druk Gyalpo and His Holiness the Je Khenpo received Their Majesties and The Gyalsey.

His Majesty The King then handed over The Gyalsey to His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo.

His Majesty The King, His Majesty The Fourth Druk Gyalpo, with The Gyalsey in his arms, and His Holiness the Je Khenpo entered Machey Khuenden where The Gyalsey was named.

In his address to the Nation, His Majesty said the name was chosen after much thought. His Majesty also explained the significance of the name.

His Majesty also said Zhabdrung Kuchoe was chosen as the day to name HRH The Gyalsey as it coincides the 400 years of Zhabdrung’s arrival to the country.

Following the Royal Address, officials gathered at the dzong’s courtyard offered buelwa and Tashi Khadhar to HRH The Gyalsey.

His Royal Highness, Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck was born on February 5, this year.
