Turmoil in timber business

Jul 30, 2011

Many sawmill owners expressed dissatisfaction with the recent timber allotment system introduced by Natural Resources Development Corporation Limited (NRDCL). The NRDCL came up with the interim measure to facilitate supply and curb price.

In the past, contractors and construction owners bought the timber directly from the sawmill owners. Now they must first get an approval from the chef forestry officer. The approval will be accorded based on the construction approval and the timber utilization report.

The chief forestry officer will also monitor and ensure that the timber is sold at the price fixed by NRDCL.

Sawmill owners said they cannot always follow the fixed price because they get timber based on lucky dip which means sometimes they bring the logs from distant places.

Rinchen Dorji, a sawmill owner in Haa, said “the system will cause inconvenience for us.  If I get the timber in Zhemgang, I won’t be able to sell it in Haa at the rate fixed by NRDCL.”

They asked the NRDCL to re-discuss the issue. Some said the new system was implemented without discussing with all the stakeholders. However, the NRDCL claimed that the matter was discussed and endorsed by all the relevant stakeholders.
