Anemia common in Wangdichholing

Jul 27, 2011

Anemia is common among patients visiting the Wangdichholing General Hospital in Bumthang. Anemic is a associated with low hemoglobin level in the blood.

Every day at least 20 patients are detected with anemia. The medical officer of Wangdichholing hospital said nutritional deficiency may be one of the reasons.

“In a day we see around 15 to 20 patients with anemia. We run lab tests to check the HB level and if the HB is extremely low, then we give them iron tablets,” said Dr. Tandin Zangpo, the medical officer.

“The place is located on a hilly area and the local crops and vegetables grown here could be lacking in iron content.”

To confirm this, the hospital is planning to carry out a case study.

Dr. Tandin Zangpo, said they have been discussing “collecting around 20 to 25 blood Samples and test the blood samples to see if that is really due to nutritional deficiency.”

Doctors advise anemic patients to eat lots of green vegetables and red meat.
