Curtain falls on Samtse mining case

The High Court has upheld the verdict of the Samtse district court on the Samtse mining corruption. The two prime culprits, the former Managing Director of the Natural Resources Development Corporation Limited, Sangay Gyeltshen, and the former mining coordinator, Nagey, have been sentenced to prison.

The verdict was passed on Friday.

Sangay Gyeltshen received seven years and three months in prison for fraudulent leasing and operation of mines in his cousin’s name. He has also been asked to repay Nu. 42 million for exporting talc from the lower Saureni talc mine.

The court sentenced Nagey to seven years in prison. He has been asked to repay over Nu. 47 million.

Five other defendants received prison sentences ranging from three months to a year and half. However, they can pay money in lieu of imprisonment.
