Continuous rain closes school temporarily

Jul 22, 2011

The Domkhar Community Primary School in Tsenkhar, Lhuentse has been closed temporarily following three days of continuous rainfall.

The rains washed down a mountain of debris leaving the classrooms and office under a cover of rubble and trash.

Thinlay, the school principal, said “we are fortunate that it happened in the wee hours of the morning when the school was closed. The continuous rainfall over the past three days has filled the paddy fields located just above the school and they burst open.”

Karma Tenzin, a farmer who owns the paddy fields, is worried. “I am worried that I will be blamed. I am now going to request the government to take my land and give me a replacement. I am concerned it might happen again”

Farmers in the area and representatives from the Gyelpo Zimpon’s office are clearing the debris so that classes can resume by Monday.
